In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations. . ."
Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery
Black Mountain NC
This is a beautiful Veterans' Cemetery.
I was honored to visit here on Veterans' Day.
It overlooks the mountains.
There are flags that represent all branches of the Military.
There was an American Flag on every single Vet's grave.
It was very touching.
I loved this tree! There were a bunch of different kinds of chimes hanging from it. There was no explanation as to why the chimes were left, and some had names on them. It was nice when the wind was blowing and the chimes were all making beautiful music.
Also on the tree are birdfeeders - this was
a little bird who joined me!
There were Vets from all the wars here.
